Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s Windjammer Regatta with the Venice Yacht Club. Yesterday’s race saw 15 boats participate in the race down Casey Key. All boats finished and returned safely for the reception at the yacht club. Congratulations John Lynch and the crew of Spray for being the firt monohul across the line, narrowly being edged out by the trimaran Triple Threat. Today’s races were cancelled and the standings are available here.
Our January meeting hosted Cathy Marine from Mote Marine Labrotories lecturing on Dolphins and Manatees. Our February meeting is "Soup Night". Everyone brings their favorite soup and or bread and butter to go with the soup. A "SOUPER TECHNIQUE" has been developed over the years to allow you to sample several different choices. Take a six part muffin pan and fill with disposable coffee cups and you are all set. Don't miss this fun evening

Our guest speaker is from Mote Marine, we’ve waited two years to get a speaker from MOTE Research for the member meeting We finally have it. Tomorrow’s talk will be on marine mammals.

There are two more events planed for this Summer. The next event will be a kayak, small boat trip from Blackburn Point to Mid Night Pass on Saturday July 28. If you don't have a small craft, you can rent one onsight. The plan is to meet at Blackburn Point, launch by 9.30am as a group and head out towards the pass just up the ICW. Information about the event is located on the VSS Calendar. The group will return before 1 pm for lunch at the Casey Key Fish House. If you can't kayak, consider joining us for lunch at the CK Fish House. Please RSVP by July 23 to the VSS Summer Operations email your intention to join us for boating and or lunch.
The deadline to sign up for the Change of Watch is tomorrow Saturday May 12. Come join us in welcoming in the new watch. We'll be passing out trophies, swapping sailing stories and eating BBQ under the big pavilion at Maxine Barrett Park

Our next VSS Membership meeting is on. . .VALENTINES DAY! When is Valentines Day you ask? Well, Valentines Day is on Wednesday, February 14th and here's an opportunity to dine your best girl without spending a fortune. Our pot luck/membership meeting will be at the Venice Community Center on Nokomis Ave at 6:30 pm. Please bring food to share, drink of choice, and lots of Chocolate!

Please join the VSS for the annual Holiday Party. This year's event is at the Hotel Venezia on Friday, the 5th of January at 7pm for a special evening of food, music and dancing. The cost is $40 for members and $51..00 for VSS guests. This is an evening event cocktail attire requested.

is Saturday October 28 at 11AM at Trinity Presbyterian Church 4365 State Road 776 with lunch to follow at Jacaranda Country Club 1205 Jacaranda Blvd in Venice. Pre-service music starts at 10:40AM. The service will conclude about noon. I've guaranteed the Country Club 150 people for lunch so hope to have a big turnout. Music at Jim's service will include bagpipe (Amazing Grace), brass quintet and organ, concluding with "When the Saints Go Marching In".
On Saturday, June 10th, we begin the VSS summer programming with the second annualpicnic on Casey Key.
Please bring drinks, an entrée(s) and a shared dish for you and your friends. There are grills available, shelters and new rest rooms at the pavillion. Water activities to start at 3.00 pm picnic to start at 4.30 pm.
This year's event will have the added componentof small boats. Small boat owners are encouraged to bring their sailing dinghies and prams in the afternoon . Boats can access the kayak launch at back end of the jnorth jetty. Trailered boats will want to consider launching at Higel or other local ramp and sail to the event. Anchoring/beaching is possible just inside the ICW chanel marker behind the north Jetty Kayak launch. Contact us with any questions.
If you would like to go out on the water please bring the appropriate attire which includes, aqua shoes. bathing suit, a hat and a pfd.

The VSS sailing class is accepting students for the Oct 4,2016 class. The safe sailing classes are scheduled every Tues from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm within the month. Space is limited so each month the class will consist of 5 students .
The training curriculum is guided by the US Sailing/American Red Cross Start Sailing Right , which is the national standard for quality sailing instructions.
This course will prepare you for sailing/racing and to become a qualified crew member with the Venice Sailing Squadron.
The summer has flown by and it is time to plan where to sail as the temperature cools and hurricane season ends. My first job is to ask for your assistance in making this a great cruising season for our members and, hopefully, some new faces.

This Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8, 2016 the Venice Sailing Squadron is conducting its Annual End of Season Regatta.
If you own a boat, please plan on participating in the regatta and taking a fellow Squadron member or two with you. If you need experienced crew please let us know in advance and we will help you find them.
Remember, that if we have sufficient participation we now break the fleet into two classes, a Class A fleet for the racing fanatics and a Class B non-spinnaker fleet for normal people.
If you do not own a boat we invite you to come to Higel Park on Saturday and/or Sunday and we will endeavor to get you on one of the boats participating in the races.
The Venice Shark's Tooth Festival is being held near the Venice Airport on Friday, April 8, Saturday, April 9 and Sunday April 10. The Venice Youth Boating Assn. has a booth at that event. They are willing to allow the Squadron to stock and distribute pamphlets and provide information about our organization to visitors. In exchange they are asking for our help in manning the booth during the Festival.
