Greetings from Venice. Our community is still cleaning up and emerging from a visit with hurricane Irma. Even though we were spared the worst of the winds and the tidal surge never materialized, the area did not weather the event entirely unscathed. The VSS September meeting was one minor casualty of the storm, some the VSS offshore buoy's are scattered and the VYBA lost half of their 420 fleet due to a tree limb crashing the trailer parked under it. None the less we consider ourselves lucky as we look to the devastated communities in the wake of this year's ongoing storm season and consider ourselves thankful for what we still have.

We are looking forward to getting back on course, having electricity and kicking off this new watch year. I encourage membersto show up for the annual last dog watch sunset sail and pizza party on the evening of October 4th. On Wednesday, October 11th the VSS membership will assemble at the Venice Community Center for a member potluck.

The VSS is a sailing organization with a mission to promote sailing and it's culture here in the Venice Gulf Coast area. We are members of the national US Sailing organization, the regional Sarasota Bay Yachting Assocation and are run by volunteers who have a passion for sailing. The VSS is always welcoming and encouraging members to participate actively in the club. If you have some skills, a talent and the time, positions are available on the board, and opportunities abound to play an active role in club events.  We can use some hands with thesocial media postings, events planning, membership committee, the club cruising programandmany other club activities and functions that would benefit from your direct participation.

I am looking forward to officially starting our season next week and seeing folks in boats on the water.

Respectfully yours,
Jonathan Phillips
VSS Commodore
