This watch started last May on the North Jetty. with a focus on our roots as a sailing club. From that point, we’ve seen the continuation and expansion of VSS programs with a focus on our defined mission to encourage sailing, promote seamanship, foster a spirit of good sportsmanship, hold races, sponsor cruises, give instruction and sponsor entertainment for the members and their guests. We've expanded the calendar with self funding Summer events like with kayak trips, picnics and the August Crab Feast.
A special expression of thanks to all of the volunteers and attending members who came out to the North Jetty to attend the 43rd VSS Change of Watch. I appreciate the passion and seriousnessdemonstrated by the members and look forward to working both some familiar and new faces on the board. The board is actvely looking for enthusiastic members to fil the vacancies for the Ssocial Activities Director and Cruising Captain. If you have the inclination please feel free to contact the board members with ideas or questi
Although it has never stopped me, I normally have nothing of interest to say each month. This month is an exception. We have had, and will continue to have, a lot of sailing activities going on so let me summarize:
Happy New Year Sailors! The year 2016 is indeed a happy year for the Venice Sailing Squadron! Vicki Solomon’s Holiday Party starting the season was an overwhelming, success as evidenced by the many toe-tapping fools still up dancing and laughing at 10:00 PM closing time (your Commodore included). Further, the impact the extraordinary work of Ken Nolan and his Membership Committee is having a major positive impact on new member enrollments and new member initiatives. We are now up to 96 members and rising. Vice Commodore Lou Salhany has really stepped up to the Acting Fleet Captain-Cruising function with new cruising initiatives and alternatives that will make this winter and spring exciting for our cruising sailors
Happy Autumn sailors! We should be thankful that we can enjoy the start of yet another sailing season at this time of year. While soon to return, Noreen and I are still in the frozen north, where the sailing outlook becomes as grey and gloomy as these New England's skies can turn.
Summer is fast coming to a close and we have now started the Squadron’s 2015-2016 Watch. Welcome Aboard! I have to look at the calendar to believe the time has passed so quickly - please get ready to attend our first Membership Meeting at the Venice Community Center on September 9, 2015.
It seems like we were just down at Burnt Store for the Change of Watch, but that was last year and it's time to pass the baton again. My wife Cindy and I want to thank everyone who participated in this year's meetings and special events and especially those who served in leadership positions. This is a really great group of people - both the folks we have known for several years now and the new faces we have just come to know in the past year. And our organization has a great program line-up and annual rhythm - something that we can build on and tweak but also something that provides a solid base as we move forward.
