Racing Captain's Report

Racing Captain's Report

The month of April was a very busy sailing month for our racers.  It seemed every weekend there was a race with perfect sailing conditions. There is  one more Sailing Regatta in the month of May 7 & 8. This is a 2 day Regatta - Saturday 5/7 will be a two Buoy races and Sunday 5/8, will be a distance race. As standard procedures we will meet at Higel park at 11:00 am for captains' informational meetings and crew assignments.

The VSS race season is moving to a close as we enter the summer break.  Green Flash races will be held every Tuesday evening.

This year our committees are putting together a very active calendar of events that unfortunately our snowbirds will miss.

16 April Distance Race

16 April Distance Race

Today's distance race was a 9.1 nm pursuit counter clock triangle race.  It seemed that the first mark Tom had moved somewhat to the NE .5 nm from the given course.  This was corrected by the 1st boat to round Tom , was Opalina Lou Salhhany which helped the rest of the fleet to adjust to Toms .5 correction. The winds were 15 to 18 knots out of the east south east with some clouds and sun with a light chop.  The final results were:

Not JAPSDIP

Today was definitely not JAPSDIP, as there was nothing perfect about it nor was the Gulf paradise. It was cool (50 F at about 11:30 AM) with a heavy overcast and intermittent rain. The wind was from the NW around 10 knots at the start time of 1:00 PM, which steadily increased into the low 20s during the time we stayed out. Only five boats came out, Fruition, Raegan-e, Bella Mer, Opalina and Flash. The race was a pursuit style race on an 8.9 NM triangle, windward leeward course. We (Flash) started behind Opalina, Bella Mer and Fruition and in front of Raegan-e. It rained a bit before the start and periodically harder later, and we got quite cold, excepting Drew Gillett, who was properly prepared.

16 January Distance Race

  1st in was Reagan e 15:45:06, 2nd in was Flash 15:27:23, 3rd in Fruition 16:08:07.
The B class was just coming to the second mark at 16:25:00 when it was decided that they would not make the 17:00:00 finish time so the race committee made a decision to cancel the race due to the light air and declared that the B class boats would be scored at their present positions at that time.  1st was Bella Mer, 2nd Irish Wake, 3rd Opalina, 4th Sabbatical, DNF Joy steering problem, DNF Random Walk time factor.
